Two v2 extenders to choose from, more on the way

This morning I got an e-mail from Excaliber PC noting that the Linksys DMA2200 Media Center Extender is now available for immediate delivery for $297.24. This unit appears to be the same as the DMA2100 that I’ve been using for a few weeks now (my initial comments are here and I’ll have more to say shortly), with the addition of an upscaling DVD drive and an optical (SPDIF) audio output.

As Chris Lanier reports, other reports indicate that Dell is shipping this unit now as well, despite the notice on their website that it “usually ships” in 3-5 weeks.

Befor you decide to buy one of these, be sure to look at the specs for the upcoming D-Link extender and the HP MediaSmart Receiver. Both offer some interesting twists that might make them more attractive to some people. You’ll find descriptions and links in my CES post at ZDNet.

  1. Ed thanks for the posting the information on Excaliber PC.

I have been waiting for Dell to ship my order for the Linksys DMA 2200, as of today they are still saying early March. I cancelled my order with Dell.

I ordered from Excaliber PC today and I even got a price drop. They are currently selling it for $295.11.

    Thanks,

    Dave

  2. Just got the DMA2100 and it works great. (Ordered it from Dell around 1/3 and it arrived 1/21).

I need another extender and am thinking about the 2200. However, here’s the issue, for a variety of reasons I have 3 standard DVD players that we no longer use. I also have a v1 extender that is useless and an original Xbox that is rarely used.

While the wife acceptance factor is good for the new extender, she rolls her eyes at the pile of unused electronics in our basement.

Ed, what do you do with this equipment? I see the post on your Media Center site for the old v1 extenders hasn’t gotten much of a response.

  3. Aaron, I actually got two responses to that v1 extender post, via e-mail.

Ebay, Craigslist, relatives, or the garage. That’s where my old junk goes. Mainly the latter these days, which is why maybe I’ll have a virtual garage sale one of these days.

For stuff that’s still valuable but too much hassle to sell on ebay, you could try the Freecycle Network:
