Windows Vista Inside Out

Since Ken asked

I just noticed that Amazon is now offering Microsoft Windows Vista Inside Out for sale. It’s almost cracked the top million (a few more pre-orders would push it into the 900,000 range…). According to the publisher’s note, it’s due to be published on December 27, 2006. Which means it won’t be a great stocking stuffer.

  1. Awesome. I am definitely going to get it even though I don’t even yet Vista (that will happen as well).

  2. At this time, we don’t have a contract for a Deluxe edition of Windows Vista Inside Out. For Windows XP, the Deluxe edition came out about a year later and incorporated coverage of Service Pack 1. I would not be surprised if we do something similar for Vista, but so far we’re just talking.

  3. Well, it doesn’t matter. I’m still getting your book. 🙂 I may even finish it before I get a chance to install Vista itself. Good luck with it.

  4. So… How can you be sure that they won’t decide to rip out some vital part of Vista at the last minute? Couldn’t your book end up covering something not actually included in the release of Vista a month later?

Did you publish XP Inside Out before XP released?

  5. Chris, every version of the Inside Out series that we’ve worked on has been based on final code. We do much of the initial research on betas, of course, but every single page is checked and double-checked against RTM code. Drives us nuts, but that’s the only way to do it and have the book be accurate. We’ll do the same with Windows Vista Inside Out. There’s enough of a gap between when the code goes cold and when the software and books are on the shelves that we have that tiny cushion to work with.

And the issue is rarely that something gets yanked out. Instead, what tends to happen toward the end is that the way some features are implemented gets changed at the last minute, usually to deal with a usability issue. So we have to double-check every set of instructions.

  6. Ahh, ok. With all the talk recently about Vista not shipping until January of 07, I hadn’t really thought about when they would actually finish the code and RTM it.

Yikes. I knew a lot of effort went into editing and checking technical books to make sure they’re accurate, but I’d never stopped to think about the added effort needed to do the same process for a product that hasn’t released yet… Just gives me a higher opinion of you guys in my mind. I sure wouldn’t have the patience to do that… 🙂
