Haven’t done this in a while, so without further ado…
I am taking a different tack from the usual rules this time: This list consists of 10 tracks [*] I’ve listened to in the last 30 days and rated 4 stars or better. This week’s list is formatted as song title, artist, and album (in italics):
- Good Luck Charm, Vigilantes of Love, Audible Sigh
- The Mountain, Steve Earle and the Bluegrass Dukes (live recording), Just an American Boy
- Prison Grove, Warren Zevon, The Wind
- In the Name of Us, Honey; Shannon McNally, Geronimo
- Home to Houston, Steve Earle and the Dukes, The Revolution Starts … Now
- Tributo al Niño Rivera, Juan De Marcos’ Afro-Cuban All Stars, Distinto Diferente
- The Girl with No Name, The Byrds, The Byrds (Box Set)
- Am I Too Blue, Lucinda Williams, Lucinda Williams
- The End, Alejandro Escovedo, With These Hands
- Don’t Need You, Cowboy Junkies, Por Vida: A Salute to the Songs of Alejandro Escovedo
A lot of this stuff came from eMusic.com, which has become my favorite source of new music these days. [Full disclosure: If you click the link in the previous sentence and open a trial account, you get 50 free MP3s and I get a few bucks. This is one of a very small number of affiliate programs I belong to, and I highly recommend this company.]
[*It used to be 20.]
Why eMusic? Have you used MSN Music? Pros? Cons?
Ryan, I refuse to “buy” any music that includes DRM. I’m also not fond of low-fidelity music (128-160 Kbps). eMusic has a great selection of artists, especially in the genres I like, and the music tracks I purchase are high bit-rate MP3s completely unsullied by DRM. My plan allows me to download 90 tracks a month for a net payment of about $16 a month. I can copy those files to any PC or device I own without restriction, and I can also burn them to CD as many times as I want. That’s an incredible deal and I’ve been very happy with the service.
You can get a free two-week trial that allows you to download 50 tracks. I haven’t set up an affiliate account, although I probably should – the reward is $6 per trial, even if you don’t sign up for a subscription.
I’ll split the difference: here are 15 non-random tracks that have been in heavy rotation lately:
This Mystic Decade – Hot Snakes, Audit In Progress
Precision Auto – Superchunk, On The Mouth
Dynamite Chair – Poster Children, Tool of the Man
Southpaw – Afghan Whigs, Up In It
Hornets! Hornets! – The Hold Steady, Separation Sunday
Swing Harder – Headstrong, Headstrong
Jack Pepsi – Tad, 8-Way Santa
Out There – Dinosaur Jr., Where You Been
One Armed Scissor – At The Drive In, Relationship of Command
Roadbull – Melvins, Stoner Witch
Set It Off – Audioslave, Audioslave
Little Girl – Death From Above 1979, You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine
101 North – Tomahawk, Tomahawk
The Bomb – L7, Hungry For Stink
Clean Slate – Quicksand, Quicksand
Kudos on the DRM boycott, I feel exactly the same way. I think you should set up an affiliate account immediately, as this post is great advertising for them and has convinced me (and probably several others) to give it a spin.
And comments on your site need a preview feature. FYI.
