[...] Sony and Matsushita already have CableCARD-compatible DVRs. (I wrote about the Sony model in this post last June.) I spent an hour or so yesterday reading through posts about the single-tuner, one-way Sony DHG-HDD500 DVR in one very long thread at AVS Forum. What I read didn’t make me want to run out and drop a thousand bucks on one. Especially when Comcast would give me a dual-tuner HD-compatible DVR for free. [...]

*First off, I hope so!
* A CE device being hacked is much different to the industry then a PC. A PC is “open“ from the start.
* The bit on Multichannel News is actually leaning me to having HDTV support in MCE. However, the article was published weeks ago and nothing had been announced by Microsoft, Cable Labs, or any hardware partners.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out in the next few months. =)

Ed Bott wrote: "So far there is no DVR device from any third-party company that accepts a CableCARD and records an HDTV signal."

This statement is incorrect. Sony has been selling at retail its DHG-HDD series of high definition video recorders with CableCARD slot. This is real product (not vaporware) on the market for several months.

Thanks for the pointer, Bosteve. I see two versions of this Sony unit on the CableLabs list, although they are shown as "self-verified" and not "certified."

I can't find any evidence that the product is actually selling at retail yet, either on major shopping sites or on Sony's site. Can you point to a retailer that is selling these?

Never mind. Just found links at <a href="http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=sony+CableCard+DVR&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&sa=N&tab=ff&oi=froogler" rel="nofollow">Froogle</a>.
