Brooks,

I have personally experienced problems with Norton AntiVirus and especially with Norton Internet Security. As a result, I no longer recommend either one. I have used Trend Micro's PC-Cillin for several years, and have no complaints at all with its core functionality. Good antivirus protection, good firewall. I don't recommend the PC-Cillin anti-spyware module, however.

Good job, users should feel good with "reporters" like you telling us the whole story. For me, I just wanted to know the "skinny" re: whether to use NSW2005 on my new Dell or TrendMicro's PC-cillin, or some other? Read bad account5s on both. What to believe and which to use? Your reply would be greatly needed! Thanks! B.

Superb post Ed! This is difficult stuff to explain and you did a tremendous job. When Joe comes out of his TheraFlu coma, I'm sure he'll agree.

Not to pick on NAV, but one of the reasons I gave up on it long ago was the serious false alarms it kept throwing at me.

I have a serious layered defense set up on my Tablet and I get no false alarms, successful intrusions, or spyware or virus infections... ever.

But you're right - this is a problem that needs to be addressed at an architectural level... by Microsoft.

I am using ZoneAlarm Pro firewall in which I can set it to be very sensitive to attempted intrusions. I sometimes do this just to see what some questionable sites may be trying to do. But, yes, constant messages of attempted intrusions can be very annoying. Thank goodness I can desensitize ZoneAlarm to go about its business of protecting me without the annoyance of seeing all the things it is doing in the background. In the less sensitive mode, if I want to know what happened, it keeps a nice log which I can go back and review.
