I think you have it about right. And thanks for the insight about what seems to be an anti-Microsoft bias on Denton's part. Still the campaign crosses a line that erodes a bloggers credibility.
In the MSM world there are usually different departments that deal with the business (advertising) and editorial (writing) side. It's instiutionally easier to keep up the wall between them. In the blogosphere, both functions are often handled by the same individual. It takes special vigilance.
"people ready" was certainly not English-teacher-ready. Are people ready to understand that?

I think you hit the nail on the head mate, this has nothing at all to do with accepting money, it's about the fact that bloggers are journalists and advertisers are advertisers. In order to maintain the integrity of our business, we must tread very lightly on the line between these two very different world.

The most advertising I figured I could run on my site was either Google AdWords or the Amazon ad block. I settled on Amazon -- partly for the reasons cited above. I don't feel quite as bad directing people to them (whatever the product) as I do directing them to a number of other folks.

What sort of writer would sign on for such a campaign with an obvious grammar error in the slogan?
I mean, really, "people ready"? Any writer should know that compound adjective requires a hyphen. See The Gregg Reference Manual, Tenth Edition, Section 820.
Or is this an overly subtle means of suggesting both that your business is people-ready and that your business has people ready for its clients? In the immortal word of Mike Myers' Dr. Evil: "Ri-i-i-i-i-ight."
