The verdict on Apple

My gadget-loving buddy Jake Ludington saw the MacWorld keynote today and called Steve Jobs’ announcements "lackluster."

And then Omar Shahine, whose gadget radar is as finely tuned as anyone (and who works for Microsoft, for cryin’ out loud), admits to "drooling" over the new Apple hardware and calls them "a nice set of announcements."

I was, frankly, underwhelmed. I wouldn’t trade my Tablet PC with its 200GB 7200RPM drive for a Macbook Air with an 80GB 4200RPM drive. And Apple TV looks like a local franchise for the Steve Jobs Video Store, where you can stuff dollar bills in it and they get pneumatically transferred straight to Cupertino. No thanks…

So what did you all think?

The announcements weren’t great. But, the fact that Steve got all the major film companies to hop on board in one fell swoop is a testament to his power in the entertainment biz. Quite frankly, I didn’t know the man was that powerful. The movie companies are notoriously stingy with their content and they dumped it all off to Steve (seemingly) with no hesitation. I understand that Steve may have had to make some compromises. But, Microsoft is still missing Sony, Universal, and Fox for the XBOX’s Video Store. That annoucement makes them look pretty bad on that front. I guess Apple can work with partners. Go figure.

The Macbook Air is an overpriced laptop that is most notable for what it lacks (cd-rom, ethernet jack, etc.) than what it brings to the table.

And, I wish Apple and MS were held to the same standards. If MS charged $20 for a zune update, they’d probably be taken to court and chastised harshly for the next few years. But, Apple apparently can get away with these types of things.
